Since my 4Runner has an open diff in the rear I would prefer to use a diff fluid that doesn’t have a friction modifier already added. The amsoil long life synthetic fluid doesn’t seem to have a friction modifier in it so Im now considering that. I see a lot of info out there for 4th gen fluid swaps but little on 3rd gens. A lot of people are saying they’re using 75W-90 on both differentials and their transfer case. The ’97 Owner’s Manual says to use the following: Transfer Case: Multipurpose Gear Oil API GL-4 or GL-5 Recommended SAE 75W-90. Front Differential:Mobil 1 75-90 seems to be the choice for F+R Diff's. The transfer case I am not finding much information except buy the transfer case fluid from Toyota. If that's all that is available then I guess it is what it is, but not spending $150 for 2 liters of fluid would be awesome.

I have a 2016 Trail with KDSS. I changed the Front and rear differential fluid today along with the transfer case. I used Valvoline 75W-90 for all three and followed the instructions posted online from multiple sources. Unfortunately, this was the first differential fluid change at 75K miles so it was way overdue.
