The exact thing happened to me. Ultrasound at 6 weeks due to some horrible cramping; gestational sac present but no fetus. They checked my HCG levels on the same day, and then two days later. They went down, which is a sign of miscarriage or a blighted ovum. Three days later, I had another ultrasound.

I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks where the heartbeat was at 106, which was low. The following week I went back in, at 7 weeks, there was no heartbeat. I asked the same question and because they were able to see it the week before and the growth was stagnant, they said there was no chance it was viable. I had a D&C a week later.
