Larian probably just forgot the line of code that switches them from being "good" to "evil," basically. Oathbreaking is goofy. You should break your oath when you break the tenants of said oath but when the game is wonky. You are not allowed to go back on your word as OaD. Be super careful with committing to anything.
I can’t help but agree. I think breaking your paladin oath is a little too easily done, and the consequence is annoyingly great. I’d much rather your oath be similar to a cleric’s choice of god, or even a domain. I love the effort to immersion, but breaking your oath really does interrupt everything.
Out of the ones available in BG3, I'd say Devotion and Ancients would for sure smite it. A chaotic good vengeance pally might utilize it as a tool to smite their enemies.
