MorphBaller 2 years ago #6. I've had guard counters go over the heads of smaller enemies, so that is something to watch out for. You also have to be sure the enemy will either bounce off your shield or won't be attacking immediately again. Other than that, it seems pretty great. I only started using it recently too and felt pretty similarly to you.

Enemies will often just hit you while your guard counter is warming up. Making almost useless, at least for me. They only seem to work in tandem with jump attacks and they have to be constant. Otherwise enemies will recharge their poise, and you'll be better off just wearing them down like any boss or enemy in DS3.
Guard counter is good, but it works much better with greatshields. You can likely only block 1-2 hits with a decent stability medium shield against a lot of bosses. With greatshields you can often block entire combos. Greatshields in general are often ridiculously powerful against bosses but are often overlooked.
To guard counter you just have to use a heavy attack within ~1 second after blocking an attack. Light attacks will not guard counter. Good luck.
