Yes, once you have the bypass valves set then you can drain the water heater from the outside. Your hot water tank should have a access cover from the inside possibly like mine in the pantry closet. Remove the cover to expose the HWT. There is where you'll see the inlet line (top) and outlet line (bottom) line.
